Start with safety and necessary help
Stop after a collision and call 911 when someone is hurt. Exchange driver, vehicle, and insurance details when safe. Follow instructions from emergency responders. Avoid putting yourself in traffic to take photographs.
Keep the evidence you already have
Save original photographs, videos, witness details, the report number, and insurer letters. Keep a simple timeline of the crash and what happened afterward. Record facts you remember rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
Check California’s separate reporting requirements
The DMV requires an SR-1 within 10 days when someone is injured or killed, or property damage exceeds $1,000. The SR-1 is separate from police and insurance reports. Each driver has a reporting responsibility, regardless of fault. Review the California DMV collision guidance for current instructions.
Prepare for your consultation
Bring the accident date, location, available records, and a description of your injuries. Tell the attorney whether an insurer has made an offer or asked you to sign a release. You can call even if you do not have everything yet.
