Identify the caller and the claim
Ask for the adjuster’s name, company, contact information, and claim number. Clarify whether the adjuster represents your own insurer or another party’s insurer. Keep a written record of the call, the request, and any promised follow-up.
Be accurate and do not guess
A quick phone call can cover facts you have not had time to organize. If you do not know an answer, say so. Distinguish what you personally observed from what someone later told you. Keep copies of information you provide and request important instructions in writing.
If a recorded statement is requested
Ask what the statement concerns, which insurer is requesting it, and whether a policy provision is involved. Duties to your own insurer may differ from dealings with another party’s insurer. Avoid a blanket refusal without understanding applicable obligations. An attorney can help review the request and the circumstances.
Bring the correspondence to your consultation
Save letters, emails, proposed releases, and a list of outstanding requests. Tell the firm about deadlines an adjuster mentions and any documents you already signed. This lets the team assess the actual situation rather than a general description of insurer calls.
