Consultation and case evaluation
The first conversation focuses on what happened, the injuries, potential responsibility, and time-sensitive issues. The firm may ask for records before deciding whether to accept representation. A consultation does not by itself establish an attorney-client relationship.
Investigation and documentation
An accepted matter may require scene evidence, witness information, reports, insurance documents, treatment records, and loss documentation. What is needed depends on the incident. Respond to requests from your legal team and keep them informed about new information.
Settlement discussions
A demand or negotiation presents the claim and supporting information to the appropriate party. The insurer may dispute responsibility, injuries, coverage, or value. An offer is a proposal to evaluate, not a guarantee of full compensation. Ask what information supports the firm’s recommendation.
When a lawsuit is considered
Some matters cannot be resolved through negotiation. Filing a lawsuit introduces court procedures, evidence gathering, and scheduling requirements. The case may settle during litigation or proceed further. Each matter has its own path; no fixed timeline applies to every injury claim.
Keep communication practical
Ask who your point of contact is, how to send documents, and when to expect updates. Let the firm know about changes to your contact information, new insurer communications, or relevant developments. Preserve records and discuss any deadlines promptly.
